ALTA Week 5 Summary

🥊

Striking – Head Movement

Focus: Becoming harder to hit with 4 key techniques:

  1. Slip – Side-to-side shoulder rotation; good vs. straights.
  2. Roll – U-shape dip under hooks; rotate shoulders for counters.
  3. Pull – Lean back off a back-step; risky but useful.
  4. Level Change – Controlled duck with posture; great for takedown setups.

Key Concepts:

  • Only move head or feet, not both at beginner level.
  • Be proactive, not reactive.
  • Combine movements (e.g., slip → roll).
  • Drill with selfie video or partner shadowing.
  • Example: Despicable Me 2 chicken dodges = textbook head movement.

🤼

Grappling – Side Control Escapes

Main Goal: Escape side control using Praying Mantis posture:

  • Block crossface.
  • Frame on neck/shoulder.
  • Knee to hip frame.
  • Create ‘suspended animation’ to prevent posture or punches.

Primary Escape: Come Up on a Single

  • Shrimp, elevate chest, get far-side underhook.
  • Launch & slide.
  • Upgrade to single leg, then get knees under.
  • Grab far leg → drive to top control.

If stuck deep:

  • Jaws of Life – Frame temple, use S-grip, strip crossface, recover posture.
  • Rock the Boat – Wedge/block one side, bridge hard, then insert frame.

🤼‍♂️

Wrestling – Single Leg Defences

Head Inside Defence:

  • Whizzer, neck frame, shin frame.
  • Replace arm frame with head.
  • Grab far elbow, stomp free.

Head Outside Defence:

  • Option 1: Cross-face to force to inside → use standard defence.
  • Option 2: Shin-frame Go-Behind:
    • Push head, shin frame, hamstring hook.
    • Beat shoulder, stay balanced.
    • Circle behind to back bodylock.
