Can you think of any real world examples in any sport where one person was great in one role and surprisingly terrible in another, or vice versa?

For example, Bobby Charlton (Soccer Player/Manager):
Player: Bobby Charlton is an English football legend, known for his remarkable career with Manchester United and the England national team, including winning the 1966 World Cup.
Manager: After retiring as a player, Charlton had a short and disappointing managerial career at Preston North End, where he struggled to replicate his on-field success. The team was relegated, and Charlton soon resigned from the position.

    or

    Angelo Dundee (Boxer/Trainer):
Boxer: Angelo Dundee had a very limited and unremarkable career as a boxer, with no significant achievements to his name.
Trainer: Dundee became one of the most legendary boxing trainers in history, most famously working with Muhammad Ali throughout his career. He also trained other world champions like Sugar Ray Leonard and George Foreman. His impact as a trainer was monumental, far outshining his brief stint as a fighter.

Before he was known as the special one, ‘jose mourinho was a struggling footballer, he was lacking the skill and pace to become an elite footballer, so he dedicated himself to management.

He became a household name ,and has the status as one of the world’s best managers.

    Brock lesnar

World class MMA fighter, division 1 college wrestler, world champ in wwe. Fantastic athlete in his own right and at 1 stage the baddest man on the planet.

However in his season of the ultimate fighter I felt he never got the right message across always saying the wrong thing or insulting his fighters when it wasn’t needed. A prime example of this was the chicken salad incident, where his foghters all thought he called them chicken shits. He was never what the fighters need him to be as a coach should.

Two years later Mills was given the job of coaching a class of younger track & field athletes. By early 1970s, Mills had trained a significant number of male sprinters in the national junior team.

He is most famous for coaching Usain Bolt & Yohan Blake. Glen Mills became head coach of the Jamaican Olympic Athletics Team 1987-2009.

Trainer Gae may not have achieved fame as a professional fighter himself, but he has built a solid reputation by training world-class athletes. Despite his own modest fighting career, Gae has mentored champions like Dzhabar Askerov, Alaverdi Ramazanov, and Superbon Banchamek.

Greg Jackson, a highly respected MMA coach. He is the founder of Jackson Wink MMA Academy, one of the most successful training camps in the world. Jackson has coached numerous champions and elite fighters, including Jon Jones, Georges St-Pierre, and Holly Holm. Despite his success as a coach, Jackson did not have a notable career as a professional fighter. His expertise lies in strategy, fight preparation, and his ability to develop fighters, demonstrating that one can excel as a coach without having been a great athlete themselves.
